The Patience of Healing

I know how hard it is to wait for healing. You want to wake up one morning and feel brand new, like the weight you’ve been carrying has finally slipped off your shoulders. But healing doesn’t usually work like that. It’s slower, quieter, and honestly… more frustrating than we’d like it to be.

Think of a seed. You plant it, cover it with soil, give it water, and wait. The next day, nothing. The day after that, still nothing. Weeks pass before the first tiny sprout pushes through the dirt. And even then, it’s fragile, it bends in the wind, grows unevenly, and takes a long time before it becomes strong. Healing works the same way. Just because you don’t see immediate progress doesn’t mean nothing is happening beneath the surface.

But let’s be real: waiting is hard. When you’re hurting, every day feels longer. You might wonder, Will I always feel this way? Why isn’t this getting better yet? Those questions are heavy, and sometimes they make you feel like giving up. I want to tell you this, you’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re just in the middle of the process, and the middle is messy for everyone.

Sometimes healing feels like moving backward. One day you’re doing okay, and the next you’re overwhelmed again. That doesn’t erase your progress. Think of it like waves at the shore: the tide comes in and goes out, but over time, it still rises. Your healing is rising, too, even if it doesn’t feel steady.

And here’s something important: patience in healing doesn’t mean sitting still and doing nothing. It means showing up for yourself gently, day after day, even when you can’t see results right away. It means trusting that small acts, like resting when you’re tired, journaling your feelings, or simply breathing deeply,  are stitching you back together in ways you might not notice yet.

Patience also looks like allowing yourself bad days without labeling them as failures. It’s saying, I’m not okay right now, and that’s part of healing, too. Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is let yourself feel, without trying to rush through it or “fix” it immediately.

I won’t pretend this is easy. Waiting for pain to soften takes courage. But healing asks us to believe that the hard moments aren’t permanent, that there’s something waiting for us beyond them. Just like a seed eventually blooms, your healing will, too.

If you’re in the thick of it right now, maybe you can remind yourself: This is temporary. I’m allowed to take my time. I don’t have to rush the process to be worthy of healing.

One day, you’ll notice the shift. You’ll realize that what used to feel unbearable now feels lighter. That the ache isn’t as sharp. That laughter comes a little easier. And you’ll see that all the waiting, all the patience, was worth it.

So stay with yourself. Be gentle. Healing is working, even in silence. Even in slowness. Even now.
