The Sneaky Ways Your Sleep is Sabotaging Your Health
You think you're fine on five hours of sleep, but your body is secretly fuming.
Sleep deprivation is not only turning you into a zombie, more on that in a
minute, it's muddling your immune system, slowing down your metabolism,
and leaving you as starved for carbs as a raccoon at the garbage buffet. Also,
it catches up with your memory (so if you can't recall where you put your keys
this morning, blame last night's Netflix).
Sleep deprivation is not only a mood killer, it'll mess with your heart, your
hormones, and even your brain's capacity for good judgment. Did you ever
notice how absolutely everything seems so much more dramatic when
you're sleepy? That's because sleep loss messes with your emotional
regulation, so you feel things more intensely and are less tolerant (which is why
you almost burst into tears when you spilled your coffee this morning).
Changing your sleeping habits doesn't have
to mean that you must convert overnight into some kind of monk who goes to
bed at sundown, but getting the 7-9 hours will pay huge dividends. And
no, downing some caffeine in the morning is not a substitute
for decent sleep, your nervous system can only take so much abuse before
it turns on you. Start by creating a consistent bedtime, avoiding screens for an
hour or so before bed, and avoiding those late-night snacks (yes, even if the bag
of chips is screaming your name).
