Period Cramps: Survival Mode
Sometimes period cramps can feel like your uterus is trying to wring itself out like a wet towel. It’s annoying, it hurts, and it always seems to happen right when you have a huge test or plans with friends.
If you’re currently curled up in a ball, here is the "no-fluff" guide to feeling human again.
1. The "Magic" of Heat
Heat is literally a hug for your insides. It relaxes the muscles that are currently spasming.
The DIY Fix: No heating pad? Fill a clean sock with raw rice, tie a knot, and microwave it for 1 minute. Boom, instant warmth.
The Stealth Move: Buy those adhesive heat patches (like Thermacare) that stick to your leggings. You can wear them under your school hoodie and no one will know.
2. Move (Just a Little!)
I know, the last thing you want to do is a burpee. Don’t worry, we aren't doing that.
The "Child’s Pose": Get on the floor, knees wide, and lean forward with your arms stretched out. It opens up your lower back and let’s your stomach relax.
The Walk: Even a 5-minute slow stroll around the block releases endorphins—your body’s natural (and free!) painkillers.
3. Food & Drink Hacks
Believe it or not, what you eat can make the "ouch" better or worse.
YES: Dark Chocolate. It has magnesium which helps muscles chill out.
YES: Hot Tea. Ginger or Peppermint tea helps with the "period tummy" (nausea/bloating).
NO: Extra Salty Fries & Energy Drinks. Salt makes you bloat like a balloon, and caffeine can make your blood vessels constrict, making cramps tighter.
4. The Medicine Cabinet
If the pain is making you miserable, talk to an adult about taking an NSAID (like Ibuprofen).
Pro Tip: These work best if you take them the second you feel the first cramp, rather than waiting until you’re in total agony. It stops the pain before it peaks.
Is This Normal?
Cramps shouldn't ruin your life. If you’re missing school every month, puking from pain, or if Ibuprofen does absolutely nothing, talk to a doctor. You don't have to suffer in silence just because "it's a period thing."
