To the Teen Who Feels Like the Weight is Too Much

 Dearest friend,

I’m writing this because I know that right now, things feel heavy. Not just "bad day" heavy, but the kind of heavy that makes your bones feel tired and the world look gray. I want you to know something right away: You don’t have to "positive think" your way out of this.

When you’re in the middle of intense unhappiness, people often throw advice at you like "just look on the bright side" or "it’s just a phase." But those phrases don't help when you're struggling to breathe through the weight of it all. What you are feeling is real, it is valid, and it is exhausting.

Here are a few things I want you to hold onto while you’re in this dark forest:
  • Your Brain is Protecting You: Sometimes, when we are under too much pressure, from school, social media, expectations, or trauma, our brains go into a "power-save mode." It feels like numbness or deep sadness, but it’s actually your system trying to survive a storm. You aren't broken; you are overwhelmed.

  • The "Lies" of Unhappiness: Extreme sadness is a master liar. It will tell you that you’ve always felt this way (you haven’t) and that you will always feel this way (you won’t). It deletes your memories of joy and replaces them with a loop of your mistakes. Don’t believe everything you think right now.

  • You Don’t Owe Anyone "Productivity": If all you did today was survive, that is enough. You don’t need to have a 4.0 GPA, a perfect social life, or a plan for the next ten years right now. Your only job today is to be kind to yourself.

  • Small Wins are Huge Victories: In 2025, the world moves so fast it’s easy to feel left behind. If you drank a glass of water, stepped outside for sixty seconds, or reached out to one person, you are winning.

Please do one thing for me: Reach out to one "safe" person. It doesn't have to be a big, dramatic confession. It can just be, "I'm having a really hard time lately and I don't want to be alone with it." Whether it’s a friend, a teacher, a coach, or a professional, you deserve to have someone hold a flashlight for you while you find your way out.

The world is significantly better with you in it, even on the days you can't see why. You are doing the best you can with a very heavy load, and I am so proud of you for keep going.

I’m rooting for you. Always.
