Bullying is one of those things that people think only happens in extreme cases, but the truth is it happens everywhere, every day, to people who do not deserve it. For some, it is the jokes about their weight, skin, clothes, or family. For others, it is being left out on purpose, having secrets spread, or being made fun of in group chats. It is not just words or jokes. It sticks with a person long after the comments stop, making them question everything about themselves.
Sometimes it feels like there is no way out, like no one would care or understand. The days start to feel heavy, and school becomes a place that drains every bit of energy left. Confidence fades, and it feels easier to just stay quiet and keep everything bottled up. But carrying all of it alone makes it even harder to get through each day.
There is something important to remember: bullying says more about the person doing it than the person experiencing it. Those who bully often feel the need to tear others down to feel powerful or in control. Their words are not the truth about anyone. They do not define a person’s worth, talents, or future.
No one deserves to feel unsafe or small just for being themselves. Asking for help does not make someone weak or dramatic. It is actually one of the bravest things a person can do, because speaking up is standing up for the right to be treated with respect. Talking to someone trustworthy, a teacher who listens, a counsellor, a parent, an older sibling, or a friend, can lift some of the heaviness off the chest. Keeping it inside only makes the pain grow stronger.
It is okay to want support. It is okay to need someone to remind them that this is not forever. Life changes so much after school, and there are people out there who will value kindness, humour, intelligence, and all the little quirks that bullies never bothered to see. The future holds friends who understand, mentors who support, and opportunities that bring out the best in each person. Until then, finding even one person to talk to can be the first step toward feeling less alone and more seen for who they truly are.
